Simple friction problems, like the one above, only have one slip plane that engages friction. You can deduce the direction of the friction force conclusively. It will oppose the body's tendency to translate.

Friction problems with multiple slip planes are more complex. You cannot always deduce the direction of the friction force (really, forces) conclusively when you set up your FBDs.
